CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Sonny stepped into the air-conditioned apartment and closed the door. The street light filtering through the blinds cast an eerie glow upon the tiny room and stirred a haunting echo in his soul.

He flipped on the light. The shadows scurried to the farthest corners. Fat Cat and Mamma Cat, curled in the middle of the air mattress, lifted their heads and blinked in accusation.

“Hey, you two,” Sonny quipped and moved to pet them. Mamma Cat appeared on his doorstep over a year ago with a litter of half-grown kittens. Sonny found homes for all but Fat Cat, who’d been the size of Goliath even then. He lowered himself to the mattress’s edge and rubbed them both. “Whatcha been up to tonight?”

Fat Cat yawned and then playfully swatted Sonny’s hand while Mamma Cat resumed her sleeping. Sonny pulled Fat Cat into his lap and gazed around the room while he scratched the feline into a purr.

Sonny thought about Tanya, the worry marring her eyes, the way she looked over her shoulder every few minutes. Tanya O’Brien was trapped. Maurice Salazar had driven her to the point of hiding guns everywhere and paying a bodyguard. She didn’t feel safe, even in her own home.

The same desperation that hounded Tanya began seeping into Sonny’s spirit. As long as Salazar was at large, Sonny was as trapped as Tanya. This tiny apartment could become his cage if he didn’t stop that maniac and ensure Tanya’s safety.

After tonight’s spill-your-guts session with her, Sonny knew that if he didn’t get some space Coty would single-handedly snare his heart. And even though Tanya’s guard collapsed, the usual doubt in her eyes cautioned him against falling headlong in love with her…and her child.

Besides, Sonny wasn’t so daft that he couldn’t see the stark differences between him and Tanya. She probably wanted a man like Shelly’s dentist friend—someone who drove a high-dollar car and lived a life of prestige. With her looks and education she could no doubt have all that and more. While Sonny certainly didn’t think he wasn’t good enough for Tanya, he also knew there were some molds he could never fit. Despite the fact that he was educated, he still wasn’t suit-and-tie material and never would be.

Sonny was a free spirit. He’d been born a free spirit. And he would stay a free spirit until death.

Now he was forced to live part-time in this claustrophobic apartment and interact with an enchanting woman who would probably never choose a free spirit for a husband—no matter how much her son loved him. The end result could easily cost Sonny’s very soul. He’d vowed to never again set himself up to be hurt as much as Karen hurt him. He’d already lost one son. He didn’t want to lose another—even one that he wanted to be his.

When his cell phone’s beeping broke into his thoughts, Sonny automatically walked toward the microwave and picked up the phone. He’d left the cell when he went to play with Coty and hadn’t looked to see if he had any messages all evening.
